The HBO Sports Group is set to stream a free online boxing channel for subscribers of its cable and satellite TV and pay-TV streaming services.
HBO Sports, the parent company of HBO, Showtime, and CNBC, said Tuesday that it will begin streaming its boxing channel, The HBO Boxing Channel, on the company’s free, ad-supported HBO GO platform starting Oct. 17.
The channel will also stream live boxing matches from Oct. 19-22, when HBO Live will debut on HBO GO.
The move is a first for HBO, which has struggled to attract subscribers to its pay-to-view streaming service in recent years.
HBO did not disclose the price for the HBO GO service, but said it will cost $5.99 a month to add HBO Sports subscribers to HBO GO, a price that is lower than the average subscription price of $12.99 for HBO Go.
HBO has been steadily increasing its paywall for its pay TV and subscription streaming services since it launched its streaming service on Aug. 5, when the subscription fee for HBO GO was $9.99 per month.
HBO is also increasing its subscription fee to $12 a month, a move that is aimed at attracting subscribers to pay-for-TV networks.
HBO currently has more than 4 million paying subscribers, with most of those paying at least $9 per month for the pay-per-view service.
